Television Wisdom Wednesday: No Fear of the Dark

Criminal Minds: 

Kirsten Vangsness who plays Penelope Garcia speaks the opening quote: 

“Hope is faith holding out its hands in the dark.” – George Iles.

When I heard this quote the other night while watching a re-run of Criminal Minds, it reminded me of a scene from M. Night Shyamalan's movie, The Village. Ivy, the main female character, is blind but can 'see' more than most. And what she can 'see' is that a young man named Lucius loves her and she knows it before he can admit it. One night one of the creatures from the surrounding woods comes to the village and it sends the villagers running for their shelters for protection. Here we find Ivy, standing on the front porch, in the dark, with her hand out, waiting in faith that Lucius is coming for her. She knows, without him ever saying it to her, that Lucius loves her so much he will not leave her alone in the dark but will come take her hand to show her the way to safe haven. This quote and this movie scene reminds me of my Savior and a bible verse in Deuteronomy 31: 6 that says, 'Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”'

Television Wisdom Wednesday: Malala Yousafzai

"They thought that the bullets would silence us, but they failed," Malala said in a speech at the United Nations on her 16th birthday. "The terrorists thought they would change my aims and stop my ambitions. But nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born."

I watched the 20/20 interview on Malala a couple weeks ago. Wow. Just wow. If you don't know this girls story of getting shot by the Taliban for her stand on educating girls or her message to the world about the power of education, learn it. I believe God saved her and that God can and is using her for good. 

Television Wisdom Wednesday: Grace/Forgiveness/LOVE

Normally I would be sharing a quote from a t.v. show or a movie today but this week I am sharing a clip. It is a three minute commercial that is lovely and convicting and will make you cry, so be prepared. And, as you watch this moving commercial, think about these three words:

Television Wisdom Wednesday: Remembering 9/11

This day is hard for me every year. I do not know if there was someone I knew lost that day. But, every year, I choke up just trying to talk about it. One image or story on the news and I am back to that morning, watching in horror. I feel, in my soul, the same pain as if it was just yesterday. I probably always will and I think - that is okay.

Patriot: a person who loves and strongly supports or fights for his or her country

I watched We Bought a Zoo for the first time last night. And I thought the following quote from the movie was fitting for today. 

Matt Damon as Benjamin Mee: "You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it."

Picturing hundreds of firefighters and police officers and citizens running into the unknown ash and debris that September day. Not knowing if they would come out of it, all they were thinking about is all those needing help. Twenty seconds of insane courage. Those are heroes!

Hero: a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities;

:  one who shows great courage

I leave you with these thoughts of mine and verses from one of my favorite chapters in the bible:

Romans 12: 9-21 ~

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 

10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 

11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 

12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 

13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 

15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 

16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.

18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 

19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 

20 On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;

if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.

Television Wisdom Wednesday: Honoring

As a refresher, here is why I do Television Wisdom Wednesday. : )
'There are some that say there is nothing good that comes from television. Some others think it is just a mind numbing escape from reality. Well, I want to provide tid-bits of wisdom picked up from all my no good, mind numbing t.v. watching just to prove there is a little wisdom to be learned from it all.'

In honor of their season premiere tonight, I thought it appropriate to have a quote from one of the Robertson's today. And speaking of honor, where has honoring others gone to? Especially when speaking about honoring your loved one. As a refresher (for myself and for y'all), here is the definition and synonyms of honor. 

Honor: high respect for; esteem. Purity; chastity; - a term applied mostly to women, but becoming uncommon in usage. Synonyms: blamelessness, irreproachability, nobility, reputability, respectability, reverence, veneration, virtue. Reverence is a feeling of deep respect and devotion. Veneration is both the feeling and the reverential expression of respect, love, and awe. So, how can we be a more honoring society? By honoring those God put in our lives as God desires us to honor them. And, I believe, that's what Phil is ultimately saying here when he was saying this to his granddaughter's boyfriend. Have a relationship before marriage that is honoring to each other and to God's design for relationships and marriage. Be pure with each other, blameless before man and God in your actions, have that deep reverence for your loved one that their virtue is irreproachable.

Television Wisdom Wednesday: Being Fit

From the Today show: 

Al Roker - "There's a saying that goes, 'Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.'"

Al said that this morning during a segment on people who had amazing weight loss stories. It made me think about a post I wrote up last year called, Why Being Thin does NOT equal Being Fit. I have never struggled, like Al and so many others, with my weight. But that does not mean I have always been fit. I would rephrase that quote to say, 

"Nothing tastes as good as being fit feels." 

That I can get behind and I feel like it speaks to everyone in a more positive light. Because, like I said in my previous post, "Being fit is different than being thin. I want to be able to run after my child and not be completely winded. I want to go on hikes with my husband. I want to climb a small flight of stairs and not have sore, burning muscles afterwards." We all need to be more active. We all need to eat healthier. We all need to be telling ourselves that we are worth the effort!

Television Wisdom Wednesday: Wondrous Variety

Azeem: Salaam, little one.

Small Girl: Did God paint you?

Azeem: Did God paint me?

[laughs]

Azeem: For certain.

Small Girl: Why?

Azeem: Because Allah loves wondrous varieties.

I love this Robin Hood movie. Some may think it a little cheesy but it has some great moments in it like this one. The innocence of a child who had never seen a person of color asked the question as to why he was different than her. I love Azeems answer. There have been a lot of goings on lately in our country (and in the world quite frankly) that have to do with race and differences. We can not avoid it because we are bombarded by the latest updates all over the t.v. and internet. I like what Pastor Rick Warren posted on his Facebook page about it all, "Racism is stupid. It's an insult to God, arrogantly implying that God goofed-up when he chose to make us all different."

So, what are your thoughts? Do you think that God made mistakes with His creations, making us all different? Or do you think, like Azeem in the movie, that God loves wondrous variety.  

And in case you were wondering, like me, exactly what the definition of Wondrous is 

- Inspiring a feeling of wonder or delight; marvelous. 

that is to be marveled at : extraordinary

I like to think that you and I are God's wondrous creations!

Television Wisdom Wednesday: The Old School Ways

Phil Robertson - "It's just been my observation that in the end the old school ways, they always seem to work out.

One of my friends shared the following quote today (from here) on Facebook and it made me think of what Phil Robertson said on Duck Dynasty.

Do you think this is what Phil Robertson means by the old school ways? If so, I am trying to raise up my children to be old school. I think the old school ways are lacking these days. Maybe we all should start up a revival of the old school ways! : ) Happy Mid Week Friends and remember to Be Old School! 

Television Wisdom Wednesday: A Prayer

I was just thinking about this movie the other day. I hadn't watched it in a while and thought I would like to again. And what do you know, as I was looking for something to watch while doing a project today, there it was on the channel guide. Divine timing? Maybe, who knows but it provided today's wonderful Television Wisdom. (wonderful in my opinion anyway!)

Do you love this prayer? I love this prayer. I hope to live in a way that I could say a similar prayer when it is time. I feel, so many times (every day even), that I am not 'living up to' this prayer. Do I even know what task God has given to me? How would I know what that task is unless I spend every day in the word like Eli did in the movie? Have I ever knelt down and prayed to God that He reveal what my task is in my time on this earth? How about you? Where are you at? I know, so many questions but they are questions we all should be asking ourselves, aren't they?

Television Wisdom Wednesday ( a day late): A Good Woman

From the show Duck Dynasty:

Phil Robertson - "If you can find a nice pretty country girl that can cook and carries her bible, now there's a woman."


I think this should be the start to what defines a good woman but somewhere along the way we lost this woman. We traded her in for what is convenient and serves our self, not our family. We need to find the balance. That is my opinion anyway.

Television Wisdom Wednesday: Babies and their Momma's

"Just because I have breasts doesn't mean I have magical powers over infants!"

I feel like I can relate to this. Just because I am female and a mother doesn't mean a can calm any and every fussy baby. Babies need their own momma's. That is how God designed it. 

Television Wisdom Wednesday: Back to Basics

"Change is a good thing but sometimes you gotta go back to the basics." 



When I read this quote, I think about the news lately on all the added junk in our food and water supplies and all the chemicals in our cleaning and beauty products. I think about all the tech devices our kids are using to learn with instead of a pencils and paper and hard cover books. I think about the fact we have buildings with exercise equipment and such called gyms where we go to get fit when God made us a big, wide world to explore and use for staying fit. This weeks television wisdom makes me think about a lot of stuff. I like it!
